While VPNs are often used to help access geo-restricted TV show or movie content, there are plenty of other reasons to use a VPN. Because the content is copyrighted and does not belong to Netflix, Netflix has to follow the rules laid out by the content owners and only allow viewers to access their show when they are in the appropriate Netflix location. One show may be licensed for broadcast in the US, while completely restricted in Canada. The reason Billions, and many other series, are only available in certain countries is that content distribution regulations vary from region to region. This way, you can be sitting on your couch in NY and watching Netflix Mexico as if you are actually in Mexico. This means that if you are looking to unblock any seasons of Billons on Netflix, but you are living in a region that does not have any seasons available on the Netflix regional library, you can connect to your VPN server in one of the 4 locations listed above and that country’s Netflix library will be unblocked for you. When you connect to a VPN server in a remote location, you will get an IP address that reflects the server region, not your actual region.
Using VPNs, your actual IP address is masked. That means that if you are located in the US, and there is a show on Netflix UK that you are dying to watch, you will have to wait for it to hit US Netflix - which could take months, if it ever makes it to the US Netflix library - if you are not using a VPN.
